This is how the Úmida dresses up as Cassaro and during the month of May, and invites everyone to see this unique version of the house.

Roots of Time

The art of Daniel Nicolaevsky

The powerful work of young artist Daniel Nicolaevsky occupies the home of Úmida Arte for the first time. Daniel is undoubtedly one of the great names of the new generation of contemporary Brazilian artists. His plural and multimedia work intertwines with his research on his roots and Brazilian roots.

In "Roots of Time", Daniel investigates the dialogue between human beings and time, this invisible rope that binds us together. your sculptures, ramifications of his performances, impress by their plastic beauty but mainly, question us for their poetic and symbolic quality. The artist rescues his roots, its history and the history of a people.

Born in Rio de Janeiro 1991. Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria holds a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the School of Fine Arts in Paris.. His work has a constant transmutation and multidisciplinary, situating his work as well in surrealism as in performance. Creates through your body or your objects, strong and meaningful images that question the position of the body, of migration and marginalization.

His work is filled with symbols that pass through dreams and the fields of the imaginary., go to war, love and religious rites, Daniel uses his childhood memories and the history of minorities to reflect on a possible multiple existence.

In August 2020, he was the youngest resident of White Mountain College's experimental multidisciplinary program (WMC) na Marselha School of Fine Arts. He has exhibited and performed in several national and international art centers. São Paulo, Paris, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, are some of the cities where, the young Daniel from 29 years, passed with his work.

Currently Daniel lives between France and Brazil. This is a unique opportunity to see up close the work of this young talent in his homeland..

The Master of Time

from the

First confrontation with space set in motion and rhythm by Daniel Nicolaevsky Maria, the spectator's gaze is submerged by the multiplicity of clocks that unfold in space.

The watch,

or “gnomon”, this perfect geometric shape that can be hemispherical, or horizontal plane or vertical plane, but which can also be spherical.

Still here, the artist decided to put clocks in different formats, different colors, different materials but decided to bet on a unique shape: circular.

so here,

Nicolaevsky Maria watches. Variations of colored surfaces that take us back to Antiquity, and that make us dream of the old clocks of the temporary hours, heliotropes and sundials, that mark tropical or equinoctial hours, or even in astronomical meridians, those who mark solar noon, the solstices and equinoxes.

the circle, a perfect shape, that incessantly turns and renews itself in perpetuity. the circle, unity symbol, perpetual motion, complete, infinite and eternal in its constant difference, the circle, representing the life cycle, renewal and rebirth, the wheel and movement of life: where the same becomes another.

So, slowly

we start to cross space and dive into another dimension, in another temporality. As in resonance with the journey the artist offers us, we go from one clock to another, of an arc, to another. And on this crossing, we slowly become aware of our body as space and, in sync, we are also aware of this time now modified by the artist. The same happens when you look at Xifopagos watches from “little twins” or for the duet of “love and time”.

However,

as soon as we approach, when we position ourselves in full contact with these watches, we found that, if some hands rotate in the direction of time, others turn against time… like a game of breaks, stops and suspensions but also connections and continuum. As the materialization of the mystery of space and time.

But also

the mystery of colors, your prisms, the mystery of Nicolaevsky Maria's extravagant chromatic ranges that takes us on a wave of blues, midnight blue, cobalt blue, blue duck, cerulean blue, a wave of yellows and oranges, coppers, reds and encores, a wave of white, snow white, ceruse white and again: black.

And even,

a luminous spiral in neon, like a mini maze echoing the spirals of strings forming dials and clocks, ropes and threads forming textures and touch, ropes tied, braided by the artist and which he also plays with to make it like a writing that he puts and draws on the walls.

A writing made of twists, ponytails, smooth or slip knots and festoons as homage to Kandinsky's synesthetic works, where sound is linked to color, where visuals become music.

And so

in dance, in trance, in your video, Nicolaevsky Maria launches us into her world of plants, sheets, petals, cotton balls, flowers made of absolute softness and tiny thorns. and we observe, wonderstruck, the slowness of the almost imperceptible movement of plants, its transparency and its intense presence: magic. Plants as an ode to life, “Living Memento”, as if to remind us what life is: nature, space, movement.

and the movement

of life, of the plants, of the world and that of the artist when he performs and that he lets go of real ties, of tangible and intangible string chains, materials or immaterials that bind him and from which he gets rid of. in majesty.
