The Mario de Andrade Library - BMA, institution of Municipal Secretariat of Culture of São Paulo, open to exhibition3 X HILDA”, conceptualized by Jurandy Valença and curated by Maira Endo. In the year of the commemoration of the centenary of the Week of Modern Art in 1922, to Mário de Andrade library houses a tribute to Hilda Hilst (1930- 2004), one of the most renowned names in Brazilian culture and heir of modernism. A reference from Brazilian literature, Hilda Hilst was not present in the week of 22 but its relationship with modernism is palpable. met and became friends with Oswald de Andrade in the years of 1920 and, years later, is cited by him even before publishing his first book. the spirit was present.

The exhibition "3 X Hilda” displays a characteristic of Hilda little known: “that of the writer who also drew and who maintained a close relationship not only with the visual arts but with several artists with whom she lived since the 1950s”, explains Jurandy Valença. To the five drawings of his own, join images, drawings and paintings by three visual artists, from different generations: Beatrice Abdullah, Francis Egas and Olga Bilenky, the last two knew her and lived with her.

In shows, Hilda Hilst is displayed from different angles, more delicate strands, human, affectionate. Olga Bilenky, friend who kept in touch with her since the years 1970 until his death, now lives and works in Sun's house – headquarters of Instituto Hilda Hilst, and his painting with strong and darker colors features animals, Mandalas, the house with its walls and gardens, bringing a Hilda more intimate. The paintings of Francis Egas, expressionistas, register beyond the author’s portrait because “they also seem to go through her flesh to reach her soul”, explains Valença. And finally Beatrice Abdullah, Minas Gerais based in Campinas, didn't know Hilda in all his life, but after a seven-month immersion in his work he created a series of drawings made with watercolor, Nanquim, colored pencils and pen, items similar to those used by Hilda. “Beatriz evoke the magical universe, alchemical and cabalistic of the author, showing a Hilda Hilst who always had writing as a great alchemy”, elucidates Jurandy Valença.

On the opening day of3 X HILDA” a BMA presents another event:

  • The 11 at 1 pm, a conversation open to the public with the participation of the three guest artists – Beatrice Abdullah, Francis Egas, Olga Bilenky – and healer – Maira Endo, with mediation of Roberta Ferraz. On the occasion, they will talk about the relationship and coexistence with the honored author, and how it influenced and inspired their respective productions.

Complementing with actions on the topic, in the days 13 and 27 April, always at 19h, the movie will be shown “HILDA HILST REQUESTS CONTACT“, directed by Gabriela Greeb. Mixing different narrative styles, fiction with reality and non-linearly, the film explores the heart of thought hilstiano and different elements of the author's work. Hilda Hilst, poet from São Paulo, died in 2004 and one of the most important voices in Brazilian literature, back to Sun's house, farm where he lived in Campinas, and invites intellectuals, thinkers, poets and friends for a meeting with the aim of establishing contact between the living and the dead.

The Mário de Andrade library (BMA) is one of the most important research libraries in the country. Founded in 1925 as the Municipal Library of São Paulo, is the largest public library in the city and the second largest public library in the country, overcome, only, by the National Library. It opened, in 1926, in the street 7 April, with an initial collection formed by works that were in the possession of the Municipality of São Paulo, in whose building the Library operated. In 1937, incorporated the State Public Library and, thereafter, important book acquisitions, many of them rare and special, enriched their collection. The growth of its collection and services led to the move from the library to the current building., located on Rua da Consolação. Inaugurated in 1942, in the management of Mayor Prestes Maia and having Rubens Borba de Moraes as Director of the, the new building, designed by French architect Jacques Pilon, is considered a landmark of architecture Modern in São Paulo.

The Rare and Special Works Section was created by Rubens Borba de Morais and opened to the public in 1945. However, the formation of this collection dates from the years 20. Among the main acquisitions of rare and special works, stands out to buy, in 1936, from the library of Félix Pacheco, writer, Senator and Minister of Foreign Affairs, which brought together the largest private collection of rare and Brasiliana works in the country, in your time. Parallel, the valuable libraries of Batista Pereira were received as a donation, lawyer, son-in-law of Rui Barbosa – in 1937; by Paulo Prado, writer, organizer of the Modern Art Week – in 1945; from Piraja da Silva, doctor, Schistosomiasis researcher – in 1977. Other important acquisitions include the private libraries of Otto Maria Carpeaux, Francisco Carvalho Franco, Jose Pereira Matos, Antonio de Paula Souza, Alcaeus Maynard de Araujo, Jose Perez and Paulo Duarte, in addition to other works donated by institutions or individuals.

In 25 January 1944, the Circulating Section was opened, in the building of Mário de Andrade library, with entrance from Rua São Luís, place you returned to 2010, when it reopens to the public, after a few 'walks' around the city. A year later, in 25 January 1945, Sérgio Milliet, then director of the library, opened the Arts Section, which brought together the specialized collection of books, magazines and reproductions. In 1960, the library was renamed Mário de Andrade library. Its director was Francisco José Azevedo, librarian graduated at City Hall School, who was head of the Circulating Section. In January 1975, with the creation of the Municipal Department of Culture, the Libraries Division, to which the BMA was linked, became Department of Public Libraries, constituting a budgetary unit of the Municipality.

In 2005, with creation, at the Municipal Department of Culture, of the Municipal Library System, the Mário de Andrade Library acquired the status of Department, winning, and, greater administrative autonomy. However, only in december 2009 its administrative restructuring was approved, whose implementation allows it to adequately fulfill its dual mission: preservation and access. December 2007 to october 2010, the Library underwent a profound renovation that involved, in addition to interventions in the building, also the restoration of furniture, the disinfestation of part of the book collection and the cleaning and physical reorganization of the entire collection.

In 21 July 2010, before completion of the renovation of all areas of the building, the Circulation was reopened to the public, offering, then, in addition to an attractive and adequate space, a collection of more than 42 thousand updated and computerized volumes and a wide opening hours. That made, immediately, the Circulant received more than 700 users per day. In 25 January 2011, the Library was finally reopened, making available to the public the consultation areas of the fixed collections – Arts, General Collection, Mapoteca and Rares and Specials – as well as the Auditorium. The opening of the Hemeroteca (annex building) took place in December 2012 allowing the public to read and consult periodicals. that brought it back, mainly, scholars, researchers, artists and intellectuals who had moved away from the Library in its period of hibernation. The resumption of cultural programming in the Auditorium, on the other hand, helped the Mário de Andrade Library to regain its place in the city's cultural agenda.
