São Paulo gallery owner Dila Oliveira brings Sônia Menna Barreto's first solo show to Rio, curated by Marcus Otter
“Welcome to the enchanted universe of Sônia Menna Barreto. Today is the day to find art in its essential state: search, talent and invention. All this seasoned with generous doses of fantasy, of affection that spreads through these objects full of history”, invites Marcus Otter, who signs the curatorship of “The Human Comedy”, individual by Sônia Menna Barreto organized by Dila Olveira Galeria, which occupies two rooms on the 3rd floor of the Centro Cultural Correios RJ from the day 15 September.
“Sônia creates characters, landscapes, snippets of visual poetry that warm the heart: she walks through various geographies, craft stories from various backgrounds, builds worlds full of fables, mythologies, truths and lies, submerged loves, silent desires, hidden desires, pleasures, charms, totems and mandalas, lace and embroidery, time bends and delicacies. in bitter times, to art caresses. in apocalyptic times, art redeems. in terrifying times, art illuminates. in cruel times, art subverts. Anytime and always, art saves”, says Marcus Lontra.
“I have a long career and it is a privilege to show my works here in Rio for the first time.. display my work here, some series, in different media”, says Sonia Menna Barreto.

Visual artist, has its artistic production the closest to the expression of the man playing, the playful man, and his creative spirit works with territories and characters that inhabit the imagination of people of all ages. His technique originates from the Flemish painters of the 15th century., mixing hyperrealism with minutiae of the French technique of Trompe L'oeil. After contacting the works of Max Ernst, Chirico, Magritte and Paul Delvaux, Sonia's work took the direction of Surrealism.
Initially this phase was decisive for his career., developing his intimate and creative side, solving technical and thematic problems.
Today, Sônia appropriates complex traditional techniques to address contemporary issues, and his research results in unique creations supported by works in different languages, such as: sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints.
