Municipality of the City of Rio de Janeiro, Municipal Secretary of Culture and Estudio M’Baraká present
The story erased through the years and its memories is the subject of the carioca script in May
Once upon a time in Rio - Memories and Elapshouses. This is the theme of Rolé Carioca's next online itinerary, What happens on the day 30 de Mayo (Sunday) to 10 hours of morning Zoom platform, With simultaneous transmission by the carioca rolé Facebook.
Starting from the concept of English teacher Peter Burke, that “the historian resembles the society of what she wants to forget”, The script walks through buildings, monuments, Characters and Demolid events, deleted, abandoned. The story of a river that survives by the resistance of those who insist on not forgetting.
Undoing, demolition, abandonment, oblivion, omission, deletion, disappearance. Words that serve so much to annihilate a building, as the Monroe Palace, in downtown Rio, headquarters of the Federal Senate between 1925 and 1960, as to nullify people and alternative narratives to those in official documents.
It is about this unlisted story - or silent - that the next Rolé in the network will treat. Of obscure periods whose official narratives delete revolts, rebellions, massacres, Characters and Events, like slavery and military dictatorship, to abandoned buildings, Like Leopoldina Station, Hotel Gloria and Canecão concert hall, passing through buildings that have changed function, Like the Tiradentes Palace, current headquarters of the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro. The script Once upon a time in Rio - Memories and Elapshouses has the proposal to tell a story that insists on staying alive.
As a true live history class, The May script will also talk about file burns - such as that made by Ruy Barbosa to deny the existence of slavery in Brazil – places used for torture such as the Dops building and assets that carry a history of pain and resistance, as the Valongo wharf, in the port region of Rio.
“Our proposal is to present an approach involving the attempts, successful or not, of erasing historical memories within our city ”, explains historian Roberta Baltar, one of the Rolé conductors on the network.
“When we work with what was erased – be purposely, as a power project – or “accidentally” - For the abandonment and lack of preservation, We can glimpse another city, repleta de narrativas que nos foram negadas e precisam ser retomadas”, ends.
In 2021 Rolé Carioca further deepens its proposal and invites the public to tell their stories on the Map of Memories (www.rolecarioca.com.br/mapa/)e a acompanhar ideias e olhares de pessoas que pensam a cidade, whether in Papo de Rolé – series of debates available at www.rolecarioca.com.br/papoderole/acervo – or in conversations with directors of the films presented at the CineCidades Exhibition www.rolecarioca.com.br/cinecidades/acervo.
“You could say that the city is never ready. It is an open platform, under constant construction”, elaborates Isabel Seixas, creator of Rolé Carioca. “We invite people to practice the city, know and be part of it in a more conscious and proactive way ”, ends.
