Soon after, from 6 May, the exhibition will be open to the public, marking the start of face-to-face visits to the white house, which for a period was closed due to the worsening of the coronavirus pandemic.

Nonsense is the first individual of Gilberto Salvador since 2018. And signals 50 years of exhibitions by the artist - who for the first time showed his work publicly in 1966, at the Arena Theater Gallery, in São Paulo, in exhibition held at the invitation of Gianfrancesco Guarnieri.

Nonsense gathers 20 new works, all of them very recently produced - 19 are of 2020, and one already 2021. They were created by Gilberto Salvador in a studio he set up in his house, amid the unusual and emotional climate of the Covid pandemic. With these works, all of them in acrylic on wood, the artist reinterprets his work in the last few 50 years. “Being closed forces us to introspect”, says.

Painting on cut out basesGilberto Salvador, Today the 74 years, is an architect graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of São Paulo (FAU/USP). But he worked professionally in the area for a few years. Since the early years 1960 had been working as an artist. Already in 1967 participated in the IX International Biennial of São Paulo, with the artwork “Dialectical action on…”, with drawings addressing the Vietnam War. Over almost 60 years of artistic career, the artist has done more than 50 individual exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, in addition to having participated in a number of group shows, highlighting more than ten International Biennials. He was one of the exponents of the New Figuration artistic movement. After, his color and support research led him to sculpture, segment in which it concentrated for about fifteen years. He made important sculptures based on constructive language, installed in public spaces in São Paulo and other cities.

The two-dimensional work of Gilberto Salvador - like the works he presents in the exhibition Nonsense –, continue their constructive language and express a three-dimensional logic, a sculptural vision. Visually they are related to three-dimensionality, resemble sculptures by the artifice of the artist to paint on cut-out bases. About your work procedures, the artist reveals that it is essentially the same 50 years. “It is in the morning that the free ‘geminal creation’ process takes place. I start by drawing shapes in the newspaper. Next I cut out what interests me, I put it in a notebook and it is only much later that I start to develop the work in the studio. The clippings are transported to interlaced wood, so that at the end they receive the painting in acrylic paint. I always work on three or four works at the same time.”

Sculptural suggestions - Excerpt from the exhibition curator's text, Antonio Carlos Cavalcanti:

This series of clippings by the artist Gilberto Salvador is from his most recent production, in which compositions using geometric elements follow a logic in different perspectives, without establishing a pure concretist character but, activate, in a possible sculptural reading of a two-dimensional object.

Sculptural suggestions are evident, visually generating the sensation of three-dimensionality in the observer. However, in most of these works there are gestural and organic contrasts represented by gestures and streams of paint, that create a sense of nonsense with geometry, as if the two expressions contradicted each other, causing the works to decline from the sculptural gesture to the pictorial and graphic.

(…) These contrasts are a constant in every work of the artist. They could already be seen in the sculptures presented at the Bienal de São Paulo de 1969, whose collection called Robótica is now in the collection of the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo.
