Paiva Brazil – “playful”

Galeria Patrícia Costa pays posthumous tribute to the artist, on display that opens on the 1st of September

Synthetic and eloquent, the most recent works produced by Paiva Brasil, during the last two years that he was isolated in his atelier, were reduced to a few shapes and a few colors, bringing the synthesis of his work over many years, seeking simplicity and delicacy in geometry with maximum expression. Are 22 object frames, most of them in small formats, all made up of colored modules that connect, like in a game of arm and disarm, loose in space, like little kites, who yearn to fly.

Throughout his 65 year career, Paiva Brasil developed a unique work, where the economy of elements can be highlighted, the curves and the straights, taking from these elements the maximum of playful possibilities. With these works, he held several individual exhibitions., and numerous group exhibitions, getting several awards. His works are part of large collections., such as that of Gilberto Chateaubriand, Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, Sao Paulo MAM, Museum of Contemporary Art in Niteroi, among other.

About these latest works, all unpublished, presented in this exhibition at the Patricia Costa Gallery, curator Luiz Chrysostomo de Oliveira Filho emphasizes the “playful” essence of Paiva Brasil's work:

In 70 years of painting the artist Paiva Brasil never ceased to amaze, either for the delicacy of its forms, or for its unusual combinations and juxtapositions of colors. Originating from our first constructive generation in Brazil, student of Samson Flexor and Santa Rosa, frequented the painting courses at the Museu Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro and drawing at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios in the 1990s. 1950, Paiva built his own lexicon, independent, without affiliating to groups or institutions. He produced a unique work where, beyond the resignification of words and numbers, in particular his “Homage” to the number five, produced interactive and articulated objects as his “Vertebrates”. The spectator has always reserved the right to choose, the option to manipulate, now in the exercise of the look, now in the tactile action. It allowed his creation to flow together with the desire of those who observe and contemplate.

In this exhibition, your Tangents – revealed from 2014, and later exhibited in the great retrospective at the Paço Imperial de 2019 –  take us once again to the world of fun and the multiple possibilities of doing. between slots, mounts, semicircles, juxtaposed plans, hollow spaces and color experiments, its craftsmanship exalts not only the beautiful, but a “concrete alphabet”, free of precepts, open to the new. On the walls, the works do not need a defined order, it is up to the observer to decide, almost like a gesture, the necessary displacement. Its playful constructivism allows the handling of these “color objects” to align with the game perspective.. The Joy of Pleasure, of entertainment, of the subtle, with the delicacy of sharing, without allusion to a podium that demands victory or success. His proposal has always been to add, to play, and less compete.

In the last three years Paiva has produced in isolation in his studio. As a result of the health crisis, he limited his action to the materials and objects he had, without this representing an intimidation or restriction on your creative spirit. He fought the discouragement that surrounded us with powerful work that invited pleasure. He painted and produced with joy, again played and played with the elements that always dominated. I didn't want to explain, but accomplish what was inescapable: art and an existence full of beauty.

This latest series of Tangents points us to a multitude of questions. Perhaps, who knows, what the German romantic Schiller wanted as an aesthetic education. Paiva did not paint the obvious. Produced so that we could reflect, provoking our senses and sensations.

Here is once again the admiration and praise for a man who knew how to explore and play with talent, but who never forgot that the essence of everything is humanity and the joy of living.

Find out more about Paiva Brasil

Discreet and sensitive, born in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro state, Paiva is part, by tradition and law, of our first constructivist generation. Although not being formally linked to any of the abstract-geometric movements, could have joined Grupo Frente in the tradition of Rubem Ludolf, João José or Décio Vieira. Between the end of years 1940 early years 1950 studied at the Lyceum of Arts and Crafts. Later, dedicated himself to drawing and graphic composition with Santa Rosa and painting with Samson Flexor, professor at the São Paulo Museum of Art, pioneer of Atelier Abstraction, first group of geometric art in the country.

Participant of Biennials and several National Salons, among which stands out the III National Salon of Modern Art (White and Black salon), awarded with a trip abroad at the I Salão Nacional de Artes Plásticas (Rio de Janeiro), Paiva developed his own consistent lexicon. Without being an adherent of an easy evolutionism, built a path that suggests many possibilities. With elegance transmuted the form, chose colors.
