In dialogue with the exhibition “Casa Carioca”, which will be inaugurated at the reopening of MAR, the event is themed “Architecture and urbanism"
After a successful first edition last year, with the auditorium of the Rio Art Museum packed to receive the artists Anna Bella Geiger and Anna Maria Maiolino and the writer Conceição Evaristo, the Seminar Series Women in the Arts returns to the museum, this time in a fully online edition. The event takes place between 04 September and 20 November, no canal do MAR no YouTube, and has the theme “Architecture and Urbanism”, in dialogue with the exhibition “Casa Carioca”, which will be inaugurated with the reopening of the museum, still no date forecast.
The second edition of the Women in Arts Seminar Cycle will be dedicated to an in-depth study of the trajectory and work of Brazilian women, between artists, architects, researchers, authors and activists. Among the participants are names such as the architects Joice Berth, curator of “Casa Carioca” alongside Marcelo Campos, Diana Bogado and Iazana Guizzo, the assistant curator of MASP, Sandra Benites and journalist Natália Alves. With the proposal to give visibility to female cultural production, as well as generally stimulating research and development of projects created by women, the cycle also aims to continue the process that generates the exhibition “Women in the Collection SEA” (2018), deepening discussions and practices in favor of gender equality.
Entirely taught by women, the cycle will be divided into three modules: City, ethnicity and ancestry; City, body and gender; and City, class and violence. Each axis will consist of two monthly lectures, that will have simultaneous translation into the Brazilian Sign Language (Pounds).

Speakers: Sandra Benites and Gabriela Gaia
Mediator: Thai Machado
Synopsis: At the first table of module I of the Women in the Arts Seminar Cycle, speakers Sandra Benites and Gabriela Gaia will debate, under the mediation of Thaise Machado, the presence of ancestral knowledge, that connects and provides other perspectives of belonging to the city. As well as the decolonization of thought and intellectual production with a decolonial bias and contemporary narratives about black and indigenous territories, that unfold and present the concept of ethnicity.
Sandra Benitez – Sandra Benites Guarani Nhandewa. Indigenous elementary and high school teacher. Master in Social Anthropology. Assistant curator at MASP. Currently PhD student at the Museu Nacional-UFRJ. It deals with narratives told from the perspectives of Guarani Nhandewa indigenous women.
Gabriela Gaia – Professor at the Faculty of Architecture at UFBA, is an architect and urban planner graduated from UFES. Master and PhD from PPGPAU / FAUFBA, where he is part of the Common Place Research Group (PPGAU / FAUFBA), also coordinates the Body Study Group, Speech and Territory. His works deal with narratives, stories, memories and epistemologies produced about the city and its erasures, bringing them closer to the ethnic-racial and gender debate. Winner of the Thesis Award of the National Association of Graduate Studies and Research in Urban and Regional Planning (2017), with the work entitled “Body, speech and territory: City in dispute in the folds of Carolina Maria de Jesus' narrative”. She is also a member of the Terra Preta Collective.
Thai Machado – Thaise Machado is curator, speaker, facilitator, strategist and cultural manager. Graduated in interior design, architecture and urbanism. Graduate student in technical assistance, housing and the right to the city by FAUFBA. For four years he has been developing empirical research on black bodies and the interlocution of art and culture as a tool of belonging and occupation of space. She was co-creator and creative director of Três Tons Produtora, pioneer cultural producer in black protagonism in the city of Porto Alegre. It was part of the Second BLACK, project that discussed black artistic doings, having interchange with other Brazilian territories. Signs the art direction for the award-winning short film “I want to go to Los Angeles”. Creator of the projects Negra Ativa and Festival Porongos. CEO and IBOKUN, where he develops projects with an identity bias, emphasizing black culture. Member of the Committee of the 7th Architecture Award of the Tomie Ohtake and Akzo Nobel Institute.

Barbara Oliveira – Recife, 28 years. Bachelor of Architecture and Urbanism from UFPE, CAPES scholarship for the Science without Borders program - Italy (Roma Tre University – 2014/2015). Author of the monograph “The recognition of slave quarters in the conservation of engenhos” (UFPe – 2017). Master's student in conservation and restoration at PPG-AU UFBA, where he develops his dissertation on the memory of the slave quarters. Creator and researcher of Ayô Arquitetura, virtual platform that aims to democratize ethnic-racial issues both in architecture, how much in urbanism.

Rachel Freire – Raquel Freire is a graduate student at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the University of Brasília, researcher and artist. Worked in the technical assistance area by CODHAB (Housing Development Company of the Federal District) and with architecture of socio-sustainable interest by CASAS, architecture model office. Since 2017 studies ethnic-racial relations in the scope of architecture and urbanism in Brasília and is one of the research coordinators of Coletivo Calunga, composed of black students from the FAU – UNB. As coordinator at the Invisible Architects Collective, researches the profile and trajectory of black architects, analyzing the confrontations and possibilities in face of the existing inequalities in the profession and architecture / city.
Natalia Alves – Journalist and researcher in urban and regional planning. Bachelor in Social Communication at UFMG. Master in Architecture and Urbanism at UFMG. PhD student in urban and regional planning at UFRJ. Researcher at the Observatory of the Metropolises. Founder and member of the Terra Preta collective. Currently develops research from the intersection of themes linked to urban planning; right to the city; critical cartographies; intermediate narratives; ethnic-racial and gender issues.
